Do's and Don'ts With Jump Starting a Car

Hello, 2023! We have jumped straight into the New Year at Pearson Automotive, so in the spirit of jumping, we have below some do's and don'ts when it comes to jump starting a car.

Jump starting a car is typically needed in situations when the car battery is dead - whether this is due to a few years of wear and tear, or simply leaving the headlights on for too long. Jump starting helps to restore power to the battery and get your car running again.

When it comes to jump starting a car, you want to be sure that you're doing it safely and correctly. This is important because if done incorrectly, it could potentially damage your car or even cause injury - something we do not want to occur.

It is important to note that if you feel unsure or unsafe jump starting your car, to seek professional help from someone, such as a mechanic.

Here below, are some do's and don'ts when it comes to jump starting a car:

DO:

• Make sure both cars have similar voltage batteries
• Be sure you have the correct jumper cables. They should be long enough to reach from one car to the other, clean, high quality and rust free
• Read and follow all instructions carefully when using the jumper cables. You should also read your Owner's Manual to see if there are any special instructions for your car
• Ensure both cars are off, keys not in the ignition, and the parking brakes on. The cars should be close enough for the cables to reach, but not touching
• Unplug accessories in both cars such as cell phone chargers
• Wear safety gear such as protective eyewear and gloves

DON'T:

• Don't attempt to jump start a car if you don't have the correct jumper cables
• Don't allow the two cars to touch each other while they are connected
• Don't leave the cars connected for more than a few minutes. Typically, one minute is enough time to get your car running again
• Don't stand near the battery or engine
• Don't attempt to jump start a car if the battery is leaking or damaged in any way
• Don't smoke or use any open flames near the battery
• Don't touch the metal clamps of the jump leads together
