For petrol and gas driven cars, spark plugs screw directly into the engine cylinder head and deliver the ignition spark to ignite the fuel and air mixture within the combustion chamber.
Diesel cars have no spark plugs, instead using high levels of compression to rapidly heat the diesel fuel and air mixture, causing ignition in a different way. Spark plugs endure extreme temperatures and internal pressures, and while having no moving parts, can be subject to wear or even failure.
Spark plugs need regular checking and adjustment of the spark plug gap, (the space between the electrodes where the ignition spark is produced), and require cleaning of internal engine deposits such as burnt fuel and oil remnants. The heavy conduction wires from the ignition system to the spark plugs, usually called plug leads, can also be prone to wear and even breakage.
